General Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the principal, substitute teachers perform instructional and classroom management processes for absent teachers. Some of the Substitute Teacher’s duties and responsibilities include:

  • Follow lesson plans provided by the regular Teacher to create a cohesive and consistent learning experience for students
  • Manage the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions, and maintain a positive learning environment
  • Adapt teaching methods to fit the needs of each individual student
  • Supervise students in and out of the classroom, including in the halls, on the playground, and in the cafeteria
  • Provide in-class and at-home assignments based on the available lesson plan
  • For long-term substitutes: develop lesson plans and assignments consistent with the regular teacher’s past lesson plans

 

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to effectively teach/supervise a group comprised of students engaged in carrying out classroom activities/functions.
  • Knowledge of business English and spelling; knowledge of basic math.
  • Considerable knowledge of academic content being delivered.
  • Skill in clearly communicating information both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment, e.g., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines.
  • Ability to perform routine typing and basic computer operations, i.e., data entry, word processing, and records retrieval.
  • Ability to access, operate, and maintain various software applications; ability to read, update, and maintain various records and files.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with departmental personnel, instructors, students, parents, and the community.
  • Ability to work independently to carry out assignments to completion.
  • Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic; ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to climb, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, sit, and stand for long periods of time; walk; lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work flexible hours necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
  • Knowledge of basic School District work policies and guidelines; knowledge of departmental practices and procedures.

Qualifications

 

A high school diploma or equivalent is required; some college coursework in education or a related field is preferred. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to supervise students, maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment, and follow lesson plans and instructions provided by the regular classroom teacher. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to work effectively with students, staff, and administrators. The ideal candidate will exhibit professionalism, reliability, flexibility, and sound judgment when working with students in a school setting. Candidates must also meet all state and division requirements for employment, including background checks and any applicable training required by the school division.
